FIS World Cup Skiing In Grandvalira
A blog from Seren...
2019 will see Grandvalira, Andorra host their largest event to date, the FIS World Cup Downhill Finals. This will be the first time that Andorra has had the honour of hosting the finals. The event welcomes the top 25 skiers from each category to the Avet (Soldeu) and Àliga (El Tarter) slopes in Grandvalira between 11th – 17th March 2019. For those who are passionate about snowsports, the FIS World Cup Finals are the most important event on the pro ski tour after the World Championships and Olympic Games.
The World Cup Downhill Finals Andorra programme includes four categories for both men and women; downhill, super-G, slalom & giant slalom. Soldeu (Grandvalira) will stage the technical slalom and giant slalom categories on the 1,200m 70% incline Avet ski slope. The Àliga slope in El Tarter is famous for its X-shape dual route, the shape is instantly recognisable from the Grandvalira logo, will host the speed and technical categories.
For many, Andorra perhaps isn't a ski location that has previously been on their radar, however, its geographic location in the Pyrenees has drawn visitors from nearby France and Spain for years. This hidden gem has been thrust into the spotlight since announcing that they would host the FIS World Cup Finals, now welcoming thousands of visitors each year to its world-class slopes. Since opening in 2003, Grandvalira ski area has invested millions in both non-skiing leisure activities and facilities to improve the slopes for those visiting the area.
Those looking to catch a glimpse of the likes of Dave Ryding and other internationally recognised skiers will benefit from Grandvalira’s €10 million investment this season, it includes a 150,000 sq. foot ski platform that connects Soldeu village with the Avet slope, it will also be the finish line for the slalom and giant slalom. With a plethora of activities taking place across Grandvalira, including an exhibition area where you can meet with the event sponsors and learn more about their products, staying in Soldeu is a must for any ski enthusiast. For those looking for more of an après-ski environment head to L’Abarset in El Tarter each evening to see a variety of DJs performing between 17:00 – 21:00.
