Coats For Cardiff

2nd October 2019

A blog from Seren...

This October Destination Ski and Andorra Resorts, alongside local businesses, are launching Coats For Cardiff – a charity event in aid of The Wallich. We are asking local people to donate unwanted ski jackets that will be distributed amongst the rough sleeping community of Cardiff.

Since 1978 The Wallich has been providing accommodation and support services for homeless people in Wales. Now with a team of 300 dedicated people, they strive to make life better for those who are experiencing homelessness. Last year alone The Wallich supported 9,562 people experiencing homelessness across Wales. Mike Cowley (Fundraising & Partnerships Senior Manager) at The Wallich says: “Ski jackets are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions and for someone living a street-based lifestyle, exposure to extreme weather can be life-threatening. This is why your donation is so important.

A good quality waterproof coat, which fits properly, can make a real difference to someone who is sleeping rough as staying warm and dry can prevent people from developing serious health conditions that can put their lives at risk. By taking part in the Coats for Cardiff event, you will be helping ensure that someone who is forced to sleep rough is protected from the elements.

If you don’t have a ski jacket but would still like to support the campaign, you can still help by making a donation to our Pass The Parcel campaign. Pass the Parcel helps The Wallich buy appropriate items for people on the streets, in the right size and in a colour of their choice, as and when they are needed”.

Our offices are situated in the heart of Cardiff and we are reminded daily of the difficulties that the rough sleeping community face including the harsh winter months.

If you would like to support Coats For Cardiff and live in the local area you can donate any  unwanted ski jackets at our pop-up location on the 19th & 20th of October at 12 Morgan Arcade, The Hayes, CARDIFF, we will be open from 10:00 – 16:00 both days ready to accept your unwanted ski gear.

We’re asking that the jackets be specifically for extreme weather conditions and still be in reasonable working condition (not ripped or broken).

As a thank you for supporting Coats For Cardiff and The Wallich, Destination are offering £100 discount off a ski holiday* as well as 10% off a new ski jacket from Coyoti Ski, Cowbridge.
*Selected holidays and conditions apply.

“As a ski-specialist company, unforgiving conditions is something we are used to but you’d never think about being out there in unsuitable clothing. Some people don’t have that luxury.”

Ian Coles – Andorra Resorts

We would like to thank David Barnes Dry Cleaning and Laundry, Cardiff, who will be cleaning and re-waterproofing the jackets then working alongside The Wallich, a Welsh charity for the homeless, the jackets will then be distributed via their street team who are out and offer assistance 365 days a year.

We hope that the donated ski jackets can help to protect some vulnerable people living in Cardiff over the harsh and unforgiving winter months. If you are local to the area, or know someone who is, please let them know and help us spread the word.  Every coat we receive could make a huge difference.  Thank you.
