What's new for the 2018/2019 season?

30th November 2018

A blog from Seren...

Since the 2017/2018 season finished, a number of resorts have been hard at work in preparation for the 2018/2019 season. There have been a number of new developments, here are just a few:

France

Three Valleys:

Meribel sees the installation of the new Legends chairlift. Transporting you in only 4 minutes 40 seconds, the heated, covered chairlift replaces the Plan de L'Homme. lift. Emblasoned with the names of snow sports legends such as Lindsey Vonn this chairlift is ideal for those cold winter days, simply pull down the cover and shelter from the wind. Meribel has re-used the old chairlift, it now replaces the Cherferie draglift.

Courchevel has a new gondola connecting Courchevel 1550 to Courchevel 1850. The Grangettes Gondola can carry 10 people in just 3 minutes between the resorts. This gondola will be lit in the evenings for those who want to access the free 300m toboggan run in Courchevel 1850. Take your own toboggan and wear a helmet and goggles.

Paradiski:

Club Med’s latest resort Les Arcs Panorama opens in December 2018. The fantastic 4* and 5* all inclusive ski-in-ski-out resort has amazing childcare options from 4 months to 17 years. The resort is ideal for groups, families and couples looking for a unique experience in the French Alps.

Although not brand new, the YUGE app in La Plagne is definitely worth exploring. The YUGE app works in partnership with your lift pass. Every time you see a YUGE machine, scan your pass and pose for your photo in front of some impressive vistas. The app also tracks your activity on the slopes as well as providing real-time weather information. At the end of your trip, you can create a video to share with family and friends.

Tignes - Val d'Isere:

Courchevel is not the only French resort to see new gondolas. The new 10 seater La Daille gondolas in Val d'Isere are heated and have WiFi installed. The ride now takes just 4 minutes 30 seconds, half the time it used to take.

The old cable car station at Solaise has been converted into the highest hotel in France. There are 34 rooms, 3 luxury apartments and a 14-bed dormitory sitting at an altitude of 2551m. The hotel will open in December 2018 and will be the ultimate ski-in-ski-out resort.

Andorra

Grandvalira:

Soldeu is opening a new 150,000 square foot platform at the bottom of the Avet slope. This will house an underground car park with over 400 spaces. The Avet slope will host the finals of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup 11 – 17 March 2019. The finals will be significant for one of America’s most decorated female skiers, Lindsey Vonn. The skier announced that the finals will mark the beginning of her retirement from competitive skiing.

2018-2019 will see Grandvalira celebrating its 15th year since opening the largest ski resort in Southern Europe. This year the Grandvalira ski area has expanded, Ordino Arcalise has joined Pas de la Casa-Grau Roig and Soldeu-El Tarter, the total ski area is now 240km.

There are 51 new 8 seater cabins in Soldeu. However, one of the cabins is not for the faint-hearted. Check the floor when you step in, one of the cabins has a transparent base.

Canada

Whistler:

For the cool price of $20,000 for 2 people, you can enjoy dinner at Canada’s most expensive and exclusive restaurant. The Blue Room is a culinary experience like no other. Offered by the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Whistler and Head-Line Mountain Holidays, the experience begins at 10 am when you are driven by limo to a private heliport. From here you take a private helicopter to the southernmost ice field in Canada. When you arrive at the secluded ice cave you are served a five-course dinner including a 48-ounce ribeye and oysters. The trip takes around 6 hours in total.
