Great Family Activities To Do On A Ski Holiday

8th October 2018

A blog from Seren...

When booking your family ski holiday, you may want to research what other activities are available in your chosen ski resort. For example, you may have non-skiers or beginners in your family so exploring other off-slope activities can be a great way of involving everyone. We have compiled a list of ski holiday family activities that are available across many of our ski resorts.

A great activity for those who enjoy hiking and own a good pair of walking boots. Equipment needed is minimal, you can hire a pair of snowshoes and poles from your local ski rental shop relatively cheaply. It is best to book a guided tour with a mountain guide, they will know the terrain best and have an unrivalled knowledge of the area. Great for spending time with teenagers and older children, fresh air and beautiful scenery make for a wonderful family activity.

Swimming Pool and Spa

Swimming is always a winner with the kids and it is well worth booking a hotel with a pool when travelling with children, some of our featured hotels also have an on-site spa offering the best of both worlds; there’s no better way to warm up than with a hot stone massage, sauna or relaxing in a natural thermal pool. If you don’t have these facilities at your hotel then not to worry, many ski resorts will have a local pool or spa, with some of them such as Aquamotion in Courchevel and Caldea Spa in Andorra la Vella offering exceptional facilities for both adults and children alike.  Mornings are usually quieter in most resort pools and spas, however, you may want to double check opening times as some European spas close between 12:00-14:30.

Local cafés are one of my favourite things to explore on a ski holiday. You’ll usually find a selection of homemade cakes, pastries and delicious local dishes at reasonable prices. I love that they are normally bursting with locals and the further away from the tourist areas the better. Look out for large indulgent hot chocolates and in Italy, of course, exceptional coffee, children will also love the crepes, the messier the better!

Local Villages and Towns

If you are staying somewhere like Chamonix, France then the possibilities to visit multiple towns/villages are endless. Thanks to its location bordering both Switzerland and Italy, you could (if you have a car) enjoy coffee and biscotti in Courmayeur (Italy), French onion soup in Chamonix (France) and then wind up your culinary tour with fondue in Martinique (Switzerland). Albeit an expensive and excessive day trip, if you visited all three, it is possible. For those looking to visit just one additional town, I’d recommend Annecy, just a short 1-hour drive from Chamonix. Positioned on the edge of Lake Annecy, the town is full of charm and quaint little boutiques.

Christmas Markets

If you are going skiing at Christmas then Christmas markets are the perfect place to enjoy local delicacies such as roasted sweet nuts, mulled wine etc. They are also brilliant if you are looking for unique Christmas gifts, they often feature some of the best local artisans. Children can meet Father Christmas, and there are usually several family-friendly activities available.

Sledging, Tobogganing, Tubing and the Luge

These are great activities for the whole family, whether you choose to try your hand at sledging behind your chalet, or take on the luge course on the mountain you are guaranteed to laugh all the way. Most luge and toboggan courses have cameras fitted so look out for your photo at the end of the course. If you are visiting Whistler, the Coca Cola Tube is definitely worth a visit.  A special mention must also go to the famous bobsleigh track in La Plagne, originally constructed for the 1992 Winter Olympics it now offers a unique choice of experiences for visitors after an adrenaline rush.

Water Parks

If you are looking for energetic activities, why not visit a water park? Lie back in a lazy river or speed down the slides, there is something for everyone. Aquariaz in Avoriaz is a brilliant water park where adult tickets cost just €11 each, a great day out for the whole family without breaking the bank.
